For years, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City trained us to expect the unbelievable.
Federal agents. Secret Instagram accounts. Hot mics. Mysterious injuries. Friendship betrayals worthy of congressional hearings.
But what happened to Mary Cosby and her family isn’t Housewives drama.
Mary’s only child, Robert Cosby Jr., died on February 23, 2026. He was 23 years old. Salt Lake City police responded that evening to a report of a possible overdose and found Robert dead. His body was taken to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
Nearly seven months later, there is an important distinction to make.
Recent reports and interviews have described Robert’s death as an overdose, but as of September 17, publicly available reporting still does not identify a final medical examiner’s ruling or toxicology report establishing an official cause and manner of death. USA Today reported this week that an official cause has not been released.
So we’re not going to fill that gap ourselves.
Instead, we’re going through what police confirmed, what Robert himself revealed about addiction and mental health, what happened during his final months, what Mary knew and feared, and what she has now said about losing her son.
Because this story deserves something more careful than a headline.
Who Was Robert Cosby Jr.?
Robert Clinton Cosby Jr. was the only child of Mary Cosby and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr.
He was born November 8, 2002.
His obituary remembers him by the nickname “Bubs” and describes him as bright, loving and gifted. It also says he attended schools in Utah, Florida and New York and had an early passion for learning.
Bravo viewers met him simply as Mary’s son.
And if you watched their scenes together over the years, their bond was obvious.
Mary could be one of the strangest, funniest and most unpredictable people on RHOSLC.
Around Robert, she was different.
She was Mom.
Protective almost to a fault.
Eventually, viewers learned there was considerably more happening inside their home than Mary initially understood.
Robert Jr. Opened Up About Addiction on RHOSLC
One of the most difficult scenes RHOSLC has ever aired came during Season 5.
Mary sat down with Robert because she knew something wasn’t right.
What followed wasn’t a normal Housewives family scene.
Robert told his mother he’d struggled with drugs beginning when he was a teenager. Contemporary reporting on the episode documented his discussion of substances including Xanax, Molly, acid and cocaine.
He also talked about depression.
Then Robert told Mary something no parent wants to hear.
He said she had been the reason he hadn’t taken his own life.

According to a Salt Lake City Police Department report obtained by Us Weekly, emergency personnel were called to the Cosby family home on Valentine’s Day 2023.
Robert was reportedly unconscious.
The police report says medical personnel performed lifesaving measures and chest compressions before Robert regained consciousness and was transported by ambulance. Medical personnel told police that Robert had overdosed.
That happened three years before his death.
The detail makes Mary’s later fear considerably easier to understand.
She wasn’t worrying about some abstract possibility.
Her son had reportedly already survived a life-threatening overdose.
Robert’s Struggles Continued After Treatment
Sobriety wasn’t a straight line for Robert.
It rarely is.
Recent seasons of RHOSLC showed Mary continuing to worry about him even after treatment.
Robert discussed the difficulty of adjusting to sobriety, while Mary remained deeply involved in trying to keep him safe.
The situation became increasingly complicated by problems in Robert’s personal life and encounters with law enforcement.

Robert confirmed they’d gone to the courthouse.
Mary wasn’t thrilled.
She worried Robert wasn’t prepared for marriage or the responsibilities that came with it.

By the final months of Robert’s life, he and Alexiana were estranged and their relationship had become entangled with criminal cases and protective-order proceedings.
Robert Faced Serious Legal Problems Before His Death
This part requires particularly careful language.
Robert had multiple encounters with law enforcement before his death.
According to Utah court records cited by KSL, he had domestic-violence-related cases and had taken a plea in abeyance in one matter. He was later charged on February 5, 2026 with aggravated assault and assault, both third-degree felonies, relating to an alleged 2024 incident involving his wife.
Those February charges were allegations.
Robert died before that case could be adjudicated.
We therefore shouldn’t describe him as having been convicted of those alleged assaults.
Separately, Robert had been jailed after violating a protective order involving his estranged wife. USA Today reports that he’d pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including violating the protective order, in November 2025.
He spent 86 days in custody.
Then he came home.
Robert Jr. Was Released From Jail Just 20 Days Before His Death
This timeline is especially heartbreaking after watching the Season 7 premiere.
Robert was released from Salt Lake County Metro Jail on February 3, 2026.
RHOSLC cameras were there the following day.
Mary’s cousin, Big Joe, had picked Robert up.
Mary was relieved to have her son home.
You can see it.
For all the problems surrounding him, Robert was back under her roof.
She had another chance to help him.
Then came February 23.
Twenty days after his release, Robert was dead.
Watching that footage now is brutal because we know where the calendar is going.
Mary doesn’t.
What Happened on February 23, 2026?
This is what authorities have publicly confirmed.
At approximately 6:15 p.m., emergency crews were called to a Salt Lake City residence regarding a person experiencing a possible overdose.
Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Greg Wilking told local news outlet KSL that shortly after responders arrived, officers notified dispatch that the man was deceased.
Police identified him as 23-year-old Robert Clinton Cosby Jr.
ABC News separately confirmed with Salt Lake City police that officers responded to an overdose call that became a death investigation.
Robert was taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine his cause of death.
Robert Was Reportedly Given Narcan
Dispatch audio reported by Us Weekly provides another detail.
According to the audio, the 23-year-old male was described as unconscious and not breathing, and one dose of Narcan had been administered before police arrived.
Narcan is the brand name for naloxone, a medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses.
That information supports why emergency responders treated the situation as a possible overdose.
It does not, by itself, establish the official cause of Robert’s death.
That’s an important difference.
What Was Robert Cosby Jr.’s Official Cause of Death?
As of September 17, 2026, we haven’t found a publicly released final medical examiner’s determination.
USA Today reported following the Season 7 premiere that an official cause of death had still not been released.
Earlier police statements consistently described the original emergency call as involving a possible overdose, while stating that the medical examiner would determine the cause.
Some recent entertainment reports now describe Robert as having died from an overdose.
But without a publicly available medical examiner report confirming the final determination, Velvet Receipt isn’t going to turn “possible overdose” into a medical finding on our own.
The evidence we have supports saying:
Robert had a documented history of substance-use disorder.
He had reportedly survived a previous overdose.
Police were dispatched for a possible overdose on February 23.
Narcan was reportedly administered.
Robert was found dead.
The official medical examiner determination has not been publicly reported in the sources we could verify.
That’s where the receipt currently ends.
Mary Had Already Said She Feared Her Son Would Die
This is perhaps the hardest detail to revisit.
During the Season 6 reunion, Mary discussed Robert’s incarceration.
She was obviously devastated that he was in jail.
But she also expressed something darker.
She would rather know where he was than lose him.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Mary had publicly expressed fears about her son’s well-being before his death.
Then her worst fear happened.

We know he had recently been released from jail.
We know Mary had been terrified addiction could kill him.
And we know Robert died at only 23.
What we still don’t have, based on the current public reporting we’ve reviewed, is a publicly released final medical examiner report establishing his official cause and manner of death.
