At New York Comic Con, Michelle Yeoh shared her thoughts on her character's unusual feature in Blade Runner 2099, describing it as "kinky." The actress's playful reaction shed light on the significance of the dark blue nail detail, which serves as a visual reminder of Olwen's mortality.

Yeoh explained, "It's actually really cool. It starts at the base of your nail, and it slowly works itself up. And then when it's all blue, you're dead. Before getting to that, it's kinda kinky." This unique manicure is a key aspect of the storyline, serving as a constant reminder of Olwen's impending demise.

According to PEOPLE, show creator Silka Luisa elaborated on the inspiration behind the design. Luisa stated, "We wanted to have a visual signifier of Olwen being able to never forget that she's dying. She's so powerful. She's still so vital. And so there needs to be some marker that she could always look down and remember, 'Okay, it's only days.' And other people can look at her and say, 'Oh, you only have days.'"

Luisa also revealed that the original 1982 movie, Blade Runner, served as a reference point for their approach. Hunter Schafer, Dimitri Abold, and Lewis Gribben star alongside Yeoh in the series. Blade Runner 2099 diverges from its predecessor by focusing on a limited live-action format rather than a direct sequel.

In an interview, Luisa continued to explain the significance of the nail design, saying, "We took the first film as a reference for how to do it. With Roy Batty, there's a couple of really, really gnarly shots where you see his hands and his nails. And it makes sense." Luisa added, "It's an extremity, so maybe his heart is shifting. It's harder to pump blood there. But we thought that was gonna be a really clever way to see the progression over the season as she gets closer to death."

The premiere date for Blade Runner 2099 has been set for November 25, 2026, on Amazon Prime Video. As fans eagerly await the release, Yeoh's comments offer a glimpse into the creative decisions made during the production process. While opinions may vary regarding the aesthetic appeal of Olwen's nail design, one thing is clear: this unique aspect will undoubtedly play a significant role in the story's unfolding narrative.
