Summer House Alum Enters Trans Athlete Debate

West Wilson stepped into one of sports' most contentious debates after posting a TikTok video expressing his opposition to the idea that transgender athletes pose a significant threat to women's sports.

Days after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham stood firm against transgender athletes in women's sports, Wilson countered her view. He argued that the fear of trans athletes does not match the numbers. "Transgender athletes in American sports are such a borderline non-existent issue," he said. Spotlighting the issue isolates transgender people further, he added.

Wilson also noted that the panic surrounding trans athletes pulls focus away from bigger problems. There are fewer than 10 transgender athletes in all NCAA programs, according to President Charlie Baker. A 2024 IOC-funded study found that trans women faced some disadvantages, including weaker lower-body strength and lung function.

Cunningham sees the debate differently. She told ESPN on July 21 that she wanted to protect "young girls in a locker room" and preserving "biological women's rights" was "kind of common sense." Pressed again at a Fever practice, she repeated her stance.

The number of transgender athletes remains small compared to the millions participating in women's sports globally. Wilson emphasized that focusing on them detracts attention from more pressing concerns. The statistic he referenced aligns with data provided by President Charlie Baker during a 2024 congressional hearing: less than 10 transgender athletes exist alongside hundreds of thousands of others.

A 2024 IOC-funded study has shown inherent disparities between cisgender and transgender female athletes. Notably, there were differences in lower-body strength and lung capacity. However, when discussing this disparity, Wilson maintained its minimal impact on competitiveness.

This division highlights the complexity surrounding inclusive policies for trans athletes. It is likely that the current debate will persist without immediate resolution.
